As we move into the next six months of this year, I’ve noticed something subtle yet significant: the pace and intensity of change often masks the early signs of resistance. Sometimes we see them and ignore them, other times we might not notice them at all. This series is all about shining a light on these subtle symptoms of resistance and, most importantly, what to do about them.
Spotlight on Capacity: More Than Just Time
One of the first and most common signs of resistance is the notion of capacity. How many times have we heard, “We just don’t have the capacity for this”? While this can reflect genuine constraints, it can also be a subtle form of resistance, an early signal that the business may not fully buy into the change.
Defining Capacity: Beyond the Obvious
Capacity isn’t just about time. It includes mental and emotional bandwidth and the cultural environment that allows people to engage with the work. When capacity isn’t intentionally designed into a transformation initiative, it often remains an afterthought.
Elevating Capacity: Three Key Areas
- Articulate the Value: Show decision-makers the importance of focusing on capacity and how it benefits the organization.
- Utilize a Rich Toolkit: Maximize stakeholder interactions by diving deep into all dimensions of capacity, beyond just time.
- Consistent Engagement: Keep business stakeholders involved and demonstrate the value of improving capacity consistently.
By making capacity a core part of our transformation strategy, we can turn it from a constraint into a driver of success. I’m excited to explore more insights with you in the coming weeks!
