Still Waiting for Clarity? That’s the Problem
May 23, 2025
🔦Clarity Is Not Self-Generated - It’s Crafted in Context
Let’s get one thing straight: you’re not lacking clarity because you’re lazy, unskilled, or unmotivated.
You’re lacking clarity because you’ve been trained to look for it in the wrong place.
In corporate life, we’ve been taught to navigate uncertainty by doubling down on what we know: analyze more, think harder, refine our personal strategy. It creates a false sense of control. And for a while, it works. Until it doesn’t.
Maladaptation is a real thing. And in today’s world, it looks like trying to grow by building on top of outdated patterns, when what’s really needed is to let them go.
🔁Over-Reliance on Self: Clarity Needs a Mirror, Not Just a Mind
If you believe clarity comes from locking yourself in a room to think harder, you’re not alone. This is what many high achievers were conditioned to do.
But chefs don’t evolve their craft by staying in their own kitchens. They observe others. They get feedback. They step out of routine.
You can’t elevate your thinking from within the same mental loop.
Self-reliance may have helped you survive. It won’t help you scale.
Clarity comes from context, challenge, and external insight, not effort alone.
❌ Not Asking the Right Questions: You Can’t Find What You Don’t Know to Look For
The second trap? Believing that asking “good” questions is enough. But many aren’t even asking the real ones, the deep, disruptive, needle-moving questions.
And here’s the kicker: you don’t know to ask them until you’re in the right space with the right guide.
I’ve met countless leaders who unknowingly filter out the very questions that would stretch them, out of fear, self-preservation, or the illusion of "staying on track."
This isn’t a judgment - it’s a reflection of how corporate moulds us to stay “safe.”
But clarity requires questions that challenge, not just comfort, you.
🃏Holding the Cards Too Close: Clarity Can’t Grow in Mystery
Ever heard, “Keep your cards close to your chest”? In some boardrooms, it’s considered a smart strategy. But when it becomes your identity, it turns into an obstacle.
You become unreadable if no one knows what you stand for, what you want, or how you think.
And unreadable leaders don’t attract opportunity. They repel it.
True clarity needs exposure. It grows in feedback loops, dialogue, and visibility, not secrecy.
Staying guarded might make you feel in control, but it’s keeping you stuck.
📤Laying All Your Cards Out: Clarity Needs Discernment, Not Overexposure
Conversely, some leaders overcompensate by sharing everything in the name of transparency.
But clarity isn’t the same as dumping your whole deck on the table.
When you share too much, too soon, you dilute your message and overwhelm the listener.
Clarity is about focus, not volume. It’s about which part of the story matters in this room, with this audience, at this moment.
Discernment is what separates clarity from confusion.
⏳ Waiting for Certainty: Clarity Is Created in Motion, Not in Advance
And finally, this is the most costly adaptation of all.
You wait. For timing. For permission. For a clearer version of your plan to magically appear.
Corporate life teaches us to pause until everything’s lined up. But waiting kills momentum.
And in fast-moving environments, waiting is a decision. One that usually means missed opportunity.
Clarity doesn’t come before the leap - it comes with it.
🧠 Why This Is Maladaptation, Not Just a “Growth Gap”
Here’s the deeper truth:
Most leaders and practitioners aren’t broken. They’re misfitted to the current context.
They’re following rules that used to work, but now silently limit their progression.
The solution?
Not learning more, but learning differently.
Not doing extra, but doing what actually matters.
This is the heart of what I teach and guide inside the Transformation Leadership Institute.
Because in a world that demands different thinking, staying boxed inside old patterns is the fastest way to lose your edge.
🚨 Why This Matters Now
The biggest threat? Thinking clarity will arrive on its own.
Most change and transformation leaders don’t get left behind because of a lack of skill.
They get stuck because they’ve been trained to wait for the right time, more certainty, or external validation.
But clarity isn’t handed to you. And it’s never self-generated in isolation.
In a fast-moving world, waiting becomes your biggest liability.
You don’t need more time.
You need sharper perspective, faster feedback, and bolder questions.
Clarity isn’t found; it’s created. And the clock’s already ticking.
And this applies to individual leaders, teams and entire organisations.
